San Francisco’s newest coastal park is officially opening on Saturday, April 12! Mark your calendar and join us for a community celebration to welcome this incredible new public space.

In preparation for the park’s opening and the SFPUC’s annual sand-moving operations, the Upper Great Highway will close to cars starting Friday, March 14. Over the following weeks, we’ll be working closely with SFMTA, SFPUC, and Rec & Park on major traffic and safety improvements at the Great Highway’s intersections—making it easier to access the park by foot, bike, and transit. At the same time, crews will be setting up seating areas, recreation spaces, and the first round of temporary public art installations.

A Look at What’s Coming

When the park opens in April, visitors will be able to enjoy:

✅ Murals celebrating local surf culture, sea life, and neighborhood history

✅ Lounge spaces with chairs, hammocks, and elevated seating for ocean views

✅ A nature exploration area designed especially for kids

✅ Sculptures & interactive public art

✅ Bike parking and a bike pump track

✅ Intimate seating areas for live music and performances

This is just the beginning! While the park will open with exciting new features, long-term planning for how to make the most of this incredible space will continue after opening day. In the months ahead, there will be plenty of opportunities for the community to share feedback, both on short-term additions and the park’s long-term vision. Stay tuned for ways to get involved!

Naming Our Park

Ocean Beach Park has been the working name for this space, and now the city is inviting the community to help decide its permanent one. Everyone in San Francisco will have a say in what the park will be called!

The Great Park Naming Contest is officially open, and the city wants your ideas. Whether it’s a name that honors the coastline, reflects local history, or captures the spirit of the community, now is the time to make your voice heard.

Here’s how it will work:

📝 Now through Sunday, March 16: Naming submissions are open.

💬 Tuesday, March 18: A virtual community meeting will gather feedback on the nominations.

🗳️ March 20 - April 2: The public will vote to determine the final name.

⏰ Submit your idea before the deadline on March 16!
